Saddleworth fire

I heard it on Radio 4 this morning that Saddleworth is on fire.   Anyone heard any more?

Re: Saddleworth fire

It's nearer to Staleybridge Nola - my nephew can see the fire from his house in Greenfield, but that "cloud" you can see in the distance isn't cloud but smoke.   cry  The army are on standby to help the Firebrigade.

Re: Saddleworth fire

Skip too Winter Hill, this seems to be the worst worry, extra troops and fire men on duty  and questions for the PM, they had pictures of soldiers dowsing the flames with a hosepipe and squadies beating at the smoke in ones and twos, the problem was the peat underneath was burning and its kept bursting into flame as the wind changed, so the scots border regiment were set to work digging a fire break across the moor with their little trenching spades, already 7 square miles had been consumed, as if by magic a bulldozer arrived and dug an 8 metre wide break across the front of the lines of smoke down to the clay and banked up the earth along the edges  (assume this to be the peaty top few inches) by daybreak lancashire had been seperated from Yorkshire by a huge dyke that would be filled with water or at least kept a bit damp to stop the flames spreading, another story for Andy Burnham who has powers over the fire brigade to be filmed on site talking to the gormless, what would we do without him, one disaster after another  and he loses no time to point a finger, yes we know Andy we can smell it.

Re: Saddleworth fire

Is it true many of these fires are being started deliberately by people with nothing better to do? yikes

Re: Saddleworth fire

Both Winter Hill and that at Stalybridge have now seen arrests made for arson, in the latest its been aledged 5 hours before the fire was reported a bonfire had been lit on the moor, a 17 year old has been arrested but others were with him, if witnesses have made calls but no action taken due to the location, this points to lack of patrols with trial bikes to reach the scene, those that pursue other motor bike riders have been redeployed to this work in the past, why not in a heatwave like this one.

Winter Hill is owned by the Smithills estate, and the moor carries that name- who went to Smithills coaching house for a Dickension meal, one of the must go to venues in the 70's just after chicken in a basket fame at every country pub with a bowl of soapy water for the washing up.
